september [Apr. 19th, 2009|11:09 am]
Last night's bouts were the best yet!

The winner of the first match, Sockit Wenches vs. Throttle Rockets, would advance to take on the Derby Liberation Front in the finals next month. I would say that TR was favored just because they played DLF better than SW. My Wenches kept taking the lead and TR would catch up but the Wenches finished very strong and won by 57. I'm looking forward to getting revenge on DLF in the championship next month!

The secound bout was Grave Danger vs. DLF. DLF was undefeated and GD was win-less so I expected this to be lopsided. However, GD stepped up because they had nothing to lose and played fantastic. It was neck and neck the whole game and DLF pulled ahead by 25 or so with a couple minutes left. In the final jam with no time left GD stuffed DLF and the arena was on its feet as Carmen Getsome pulled off multiple grand slams. Unfortunately it was not enough and DLF won 129-128! What a finish!

People watching at the gym is so much fun. Last week there was a tiny Asian woman on the treadmill who ran exactly like C-3PO. I mean the arms and everything. I had to stop looking because I couldn't stop laughing and that hurts the cardio :)

A collection of stupid game show answers. This other clip from the original Feud is so funny. Dawson can't handle her answer and it just keeps getting better.

Here's a tumblr that [info]animatronicat will enjoy.

merby [Apr. 5th, 2009|12:04 am]
Tonight was the Throwdown in the Sound II derby marathon. There was a tootsy roller bout (6-10 year old girls), a derby brats bout (11-18 year old girls), a female northwest all-stars bout, and three male derby bouts. Yes, you heard me. Male derby. Also apparently called merby.

Merby is what you would expect: faster, harder, and more explosive than the women. They skated much differently than the girls using lots of aggressive cuts. It finally dawned on me that this looked just like hockey and that was the difference. And do they hit each other! The female pack tends to stick together and they push more than hit whereas when the jammers would hit the male pack, if often dispersed into flying shoulders and hip shots. Brutal! I think they only do this once a year which is too bad.

RCR coaches Quadzilla (a.k.a Barack O'Trauma) and Corporal Punishment took part in the merby fun. Quadzilla is a total beast and the best skater I've seen yet. He dodged hit after hit and when someone tried to body block him he would 360 around the guy. His best move of the night was using his leg to slingshot his jammer. I later heard from the guy next to me that Quadzilla travels around the country doing skate tricks.

Unfortunately things ended very badly. In the last jam of the merby title bout, one player went down hard, got kneed in the back of the head by someone trying to dodge him, and the knee caused him to hit his head on the ground. At least that's how I saw it. Most of what was left of the crowd, me included, waited the twenty minutes or so it took to get him on the stretcher and out of the building. I overhead one person saying the skater couldn't feel his neck and couldn't move his arms. Let's hope he's okay :(

(A derby brat was also carted off earlier but she was sitting up and seemed fine so they were probably just being safe)

what [Mar. 31st, 2009|11:04 pm]
What is Shirley Manson doing on Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles? I did a complete double take.

Two great Portland derby names I forgot to mention: Slaybia Majora and Lord Rolldermort. I think the latter may be my all time favorite.

I've begun looking at twitter somewhat consistently because many people I know have picked it up or converted from standard blogging. I caught myself tonight thinking about silly descriptions of useless things I was doing and how I kinda wanted to share them.

Lord help me. At the sausage fest.

bacon weekend [Mar. 29th, 2009|05:31 pm]
[music |the pillows - monster c.c.]

Twice I have been denied but Voodoo Doughnut finally had the bacon maple bar! Delicious! I also noticed the "Arnold Palmer" so I had to ask about it, and sure enough, it's the drink in doughnut form. Not bad.

While waiting in line for said donuts (I'm getting tired of spelling it the other way), an addled drug addict with face tattoos kept falling asleep while standing up on the sidewalk. A guy walked by him, clapped once really hard, and shouted "wake up!" Passing by us in line he added "this is why you don't do heroin, kids." I had to laugh.

The main reason for the Portland trip was to see our derby girls take on Portland's finest. Our B-team got raped thanks quite a bit to Smack ya Sideways' brutal D. She was hard not to like. When she is lead jammer she does, in fact, skate sideways.

The introduction for the Wheels of Justice, Portland's All-star team, was loud and spooky. They had very fancy uniforms without names on the back. While our girls did a standard warm up around the track, the Justice did fancy coordinating passing routines. I mean, this was some real Team Evil shit. Furthermore, there were 110 penalties in the first half and we spent most of the game down a gal or two. We started with the early lead and were only down a few at the half. Justice came back out big and was up 50 at one point. We fought back to get within 14 or so but just couldn't make up the gap. Sadness. [info]hoboscratch was respectful in victory.

I set the high score on Donkey Kong at Ground Kontrol only to figure out that they turn the machines off every night :(

Bacon, basil, and brie on a waffle? Delectable!

After all of the crap I ate yesterday, I had Crispy French Toast (FT dipped in corn flakes!) and bacon at Mother's this morning I can't motivate myself to do anything now. I slept during half of the ride back. Bwwaaaa.

lazy programming at its finest [Mar. 24th, 2009|06:38 pm]
A NULL DACL (discretionary access control list) allows everyone full access to the object in question. Obviously, you don't want to do that but there are a lot of lazy people out there. A security reviewer wrote a perl script to find NULL DACLs like this:

SetSecurityDescriptorDacl(&sd, TRUE, NULL, FALSE);

so he could file bugs. One set of bugs was resolved as fixed, he ran his script to verify, and the code passed. Upon a later manual review, the security reviewer noticed the sly developer had changed the call to this:

SetSecurityDescriptorDacl(&sd, TRUE, ::malloc(0xffffffff), FALSE);

I just about fell out of my chair at work :)

itchy. tasty. [Mar. 17th, 2009|11:19 pm]
I finally got around to watching Dr. Horrible. It was cute, but worth watching just for Felicia <3.

What the hell is Facebook doing, btw? I guess they decided they needed to completely imitate a site with 1/30th of the users. Thanks for making a change that tells me less about my friends. Grr.

The Northwest has such an abundance of trees that thankfully I won't need this. They don't tell you in the ad that it holds over half a liter, twice the volume commonly urinated!

Check out Avon's new injectable-grade facial filler.

In these stressful times, it's good to slow things down and take it easy with Sonic.

Just when I thought that what passes for fashionable sunglasses these days couldn't get worse, shit just got real.

who watches the rollergirls? [Mar. 8th, 2009|11:44 pm]
Bout two of the Rat City Rollergirls was yesterday and KeyArena was packed. As I just found out, the big rivalry is between my Sockit Wenches and the Derby Liberation Front. The first half was a closely fought defensive battle and, well, the DLF made some crazy half-time adjustment and then dominated the Wenches.

What happened, Wenches?

I just got back from Watchmen and it was decent. Good and bad (wtf with the music cues?). I had read that the ending was "completely changed" and some nerds on the internet were upset. Really, the changes were minor except for one "big" thing that doesn't actually matter. Oh, internet.

Biggest disappointment: no one said "Juspeczyk." In fact, the Spectres aren't even billed with that name. I think it may be unpronounceable.

Yoyogi Park on a Sunday is a must if you visit Tokyo. My favorite thing to watch were the Greasers, of course. One of them in particular had a seemly impossible coiffure. Here they are in a music video and the awesome guy is featured prominently. You even get to see how he does his hair!

roller derby is amazing [Feb. 8th, 2009|03:20 pm]
I had heard of the Rat City Rollergirls a couple of years ago but I didn't really understand what roller derby is. I knew that [info]mixmaster_morty and [info]animatronicat were fans, so it was one of those things I always "meant to do." This year they've become so popular that they're playing most of their bouts at the KeyArena right by my place so I have no more excuses. Yesterday, Jon, [info]hoboscratch, and I went to the season opener an had a blast.

As usual, I always enjoy trying to predict what sorts of people will go to an event. I was guessing half, uh, WNBA fans and half Suicide Girls (I was imagining this is why [info]mixmaster_morty likes it). I overestimated on the latter. I was surprised to see a fair number of elderly couples there as well.

KeyArena was completely unprepared from a concessions standpoint. Because of this, the Arena apologized and allowed everyone to leave and bring in their own food. Between bouts we hit up Dick's and a liquor store and walked back in with four bags of awesome. Being able to openly bring food into a stadium was quite liberating.

The two bouts were close in the final minutes. The Sockit Wenches were up 40 on Grave Danger at one point, but the Danger pulled within one going into the final jam and the Wenches held on. In bout two, the Derby Liberation Front held a small lead for most of the game but the Throttle Rockets got within one with a couple Jams to go. DLF was able to hold on as well.

Doing a little reading today, I discovered our girls have been doing quite well at the national level.

I think I like the names they come up with the best. Personal favorites: Georgia O'Grief, Sara Problem (number: ?), Alexis of Evil, and Sister Piston.

Yeah, I think I'm going to get season tickets.

(Everett has a league too)

Edit: Spelling, inaccuracies.

4.5 [Jan. 30th, 2009|11:24 pm]
I experienced my first Seattle earthquake at about 6AM this morning. It was slightly less than the Tokyo 5.0 in October, but it felt stronger. JC was trying to take a nap during the Tokyo one and now I know how he felt. I was thinking "5 more minutes" before I woke up and remembered that I live alone.

Two people who are 4-5 blocks to the east of me didn't feel it at all. This either means they sleep more soundly than I do or my building is ready to collapse. I should probably figure that out.

seattle is retarded [Dec. 24th, 2008|01:29 pm]
The roads and sidewalks are such a disaster because we don't use salt:
By ruling out salt and some of the chemicals routinely used by
snowbound cities, Seattle has embraced a less-effective strategy
for clearing roads, namely sand sprinkled on top of snowpack along
major arterials... Seattle also equips its plows with rubber blades. That minimizes the damage to roads and manhole covers... Although the city had plowed 29 of its 36 major routes, "nothing is clear," Kuck said late Monday afternoon.
Nothing is clear? Shocking!

They're worried about the damage to Puget Sound if they used salt... but the Sound is brackish anyway. Okay, perhaps some of it would get into the fresh water but really they only need to salt twice a year. Plus, the obscene amount of sand they've dumped can't be good either. I'm sure [info]tro11op could chime in a little here.

An estimated four thousand people slept at the airport Sunday night. A friend of mine had a 7AM flight on Monday that didn't leave until 5:30PM and it only took him to San Fran, not his original destination of DC. Why were so many flights canceled and why was his flight delayed despite no new snow? They ran out of de-icer. Where do they keep the de-icer? On the other side of the mountains. Unbelievable.

Fortunately the airport has been restocked with de-icer so they can go back to Mace-ing people with it.

My rescheduled flight is tonight but there's another two inches coming so we'll see!

japan wins again, amongst other things [Dec. 17th, 2008|10:58 pm]
I guess infinite toys are a recent trend in Japan. Enjoying the little things in life is certainly not a bad idea, but of course Japan has to make it creepy.

The Virtual Bubblewrap toy looks to be the best of the bunch (look how much fun you can have with it) but it's more than meets the eye:
The toy makes a sound effect every 100 pops, including “door chime”, “barking dog”, “fart”, and “sexy voice”. To add even more excitement to the craziness of Puchipuchi, there’s a 1:1000 chance that you’ll get a “puchi lucky” toy that has a heart-shaped bubble.
The next level above sexy voice is the moe version...

I found the banana peeling toy the most entertaining just because it plays the sound of a woman saying the Japanese onomatopoeia for peeling, "peron." Honestly, I don't know how the country decided upon that word but that's what it is. With a little searching, I found more details:
In addition there are 4 banana types. Aho Banana with such winning phrases as “Peron~” and “Perorincho~”, Osanai Banana for the lolicons that pouts “Don’t look!” and “Enjoy your meal~”, the Sexy Banana for the erojiji’s saying randy phrases such as “iya~n” and “you’re so naughty” and of course the Tsundere Banana with classic hits such as “don’t you dare look!” and “it’s not like I WANT you to see!”
Dammit, Japan!

The most amazing bentos evar.

I was at a friend's housewarming party and she wanted advice on the paint chips she had up on her soon-to-be purple accent wall. I think some people were seriously trying to help her but I was going purely by name. I thought I had found my favorite when I saw Dark Triumph but I soon discovered Silent Majesty.

I think I need to ditch this whole software thing and get a job naming paint chips. I can see it now... Lustrous Russet...

I guess this is old, but Andy McKee is an amazing fingerstyle guitarist. I linked to my favorite song of his so far, and it's pretty tame as far as his playing talent goes so check out the others like this one. Here's a little something for you Toto fans out there. And I didn't know partial capos even existed!

video game system quiz [Dec. 8th, 2008|08:45 pm]
This is making the rounds everywhere so you've probably seen it, but give it a shot if you haven't already. I think it's more fun than it should be just because there's a time limit. At the end, you get to see the stats so far, which is a nice touch.

I was able to get 42/69 with only a few that I knew but couldn't remember. There are some really obscure systems on there.
